San Diego’s First Wind Energy Symposium to Discuss the Benefits of Developing a Local Source of Clean Energy

East San Diego County is home to one of the premier wind resource areas in California, according to the Renewable Energy Transmission Initiative. Four wind energy projects are currently in various stages of planning or consideration near McCain Valley in San Diego County, and if approved, will have a tremendous impact on the region’s ability to successfully meet renewable energy goals and improve air quality.

The potential for a new green economy has been widely praised and has received extensive attention and media coverage. Despite this enthusiasm – and the investment of millions of stimulus dollars from the federal government – the future growth of green jobs remains somewhat unclear. The goal of this symposium is to identify opportunities for growth, address barriers and develop strategies that will create new jobs and opportunities

The San Diego Workforce Partnership is funding a career transition for program for professional level job seekers.  The Career Transition and Development for Professionals program is designed to assist college-educated job seekers repackage their skills to meet current and emerging employment opportunities.  The program is offered at each of the three public universities in San Diego: CSU San Marcos, SDSU, and UC San Diego. 

The basic requirements for eligibility for the Career Transition and Development program are:

• Must have a four year college degree (or higher)
• Must have five years (or more) professional level experience
• Must be classified as a Dislocated Worker by a Career Center
• Must be enrolled and active within the Career Center network

This is not a job placement program, nor does it focus on green employment; however, previous programs participants have been very successful in reaching their goal of re-employment and this program would be very beneficial to those seeking employment in the green field.

On March 30, 2011, SDG&E will host a workshop on the Green Economy and Green Jobs.  This workshop will deal with sustainability as it affects the U.S. and world economies. Toward this end, the issues of a "green economy" and "green jobs" will illustrate the interdependence of each of the elements of the Triple Bottom Line. This session will also provide a review of the concepts presented in the first three sessions of SDG&E's sustainability series.

Here you will find:

•Internships in renewable energies such as solar and fuel cells, energy efficiency, atmospheric sciences, ecology, global carbon cycles, climatology, and more.
•Fellowships at DOE facilities in a number of science and technology areas, as well as AAAS Fellowships, which provide the opportunity for scientists and engineers to learn about policy-making in energy efficiency and renewable energy while contributing their knowledge and analytical skills to the federal government.

The California Center for Sustainable Energy (CCSE) and the Department of Energy (DOE) are partnering to help expand the capacity to provide solar thermal training at community colleges and high schools to meet student demand and help provide skilled workers for the growing solar industry.

CCSE will be conducting free Train-the-Trainer courses throughout the state to increase the number of qualified solar thermal instructors.  Our next Train-the-Trainer will be taking place at Rio Hondo College in Whittier, CA on June 7, 8, 9 and 10.   Attendees will receive a $200 stipend to cover time and travel costs. We will be accepting applications to attend the training from local community colleges and other public school faculty.

Cuyamaca College will be offering a free 50 hour CALCTP Training in 2011

What is CALCTP?

The California Advanced Lighting Controls Training Program (CALCTP) is a statewide
initiative aimed at increasing the use of advanced lighting controls in commercial
buildings and industrial facilities. Certification of advanced lighting issued by a
CALCTP- certified electrician to the building owner prior to their certificate of occupancy
enables the owner to apply for additionalrebates.

Cuyamaca College is now offering a one-month overview course entitled Introduction to Green Building Careers.

This 120-hour program includes Basic Construction Principles, Environmental Training, Introduction to Green Building, Energy Fundamentals, Energy Retrofits & Efficiency, Water Efficient Building & Retrofits, Solar Hot Water Installation & Design, Solar Electricity Installation & Design, Work Readiness and Work Experience. The program will prepare students to enter technical training programs and/or entry level positions within Green Building.
